CYCLE 25

Gary Zhexi Zhang is an artist, researcher and writer based in the UK. Zhang works and collaborates across various media, including film and video, digital simulation works, journalistic narratives, archive materials, writing and opera. In this talk he will discuss recent projects, which have been largely concerned with finance, economics and the weird temporalities of catastrophe. His last solo exhibition, Cycle 25, documented objects at the boundaries of speculation and nature, such as natural disasters, scam nations and cosmic economies.


Other exhibitions and presentations include Rehearsing the Future, Alien Art Center; Douglas Hyde Gallery online screenings; The Principle of Hope, IOAM; Liquid Ground, Para Site; Participation Mystique at Ming Contemporary Art Museum; the Swamp School at the Venice Architecture Biennale.

As a writer, he contributes Frieze, MIT Journal of Design and Science, VERGE Journal, ArtReview, ART PAPERS, and others. Recent book contributions include Against Reduction: Designing a Human Future with Machines (MIT Press, 2021) and Catastrophe Time! (Also editor, Strange Attractor Press, forthcoming). As a researcher, he has held fellowships at the Berggruen Institute in L.A. and Sakiya - Art Science Agriculture in Ramallah. He is a co-founder of London and Zurich-based design studio Foreign Objects, which received the Mozilla Creative Media Award in 2019. As an employee, he has taught at Goldsmiths, University of London and Parsons School of Design, and sometimes works as a “strategist”.
