guest talk TOSHiKATSU KiUCHi: The Architecture with-in the End of the World

16.12. AT 17.00 GUEST TALK BY TOSHiKATSU KiUCHi AT ETH HONGGERBERG HIB E 15 OR ZOOM — ID : 672 0221 1114

This talk introduces projects of SUNAKI and Toshikatsu Kiuchi that re-frames architectural design under the time of crises. Rather than treating crises to be “solved” through control or mitigation, those projects propose a practice framework that stays with unresolved issues as sites of care, maintenance, and generative eventalization.

The talk will cover the four projects: the dismantling and re-assembly of a postwar wooden house for the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale; the conversion of a vacant house into “Shodoshima House”; an adaptive design and assembly system for reclaimed, non-standard timber members; and the 19th Venice Architecture Biennale Japan Pavilion “In-Between,” which negotiates between human and non-human agents.

Toshikatsu Kiuchi is a Project Associate Professor at the Kyoto Institute of Technology and an architect, serving as Co-Representative of SUNAKI Inc. His works bridge experimentation and practice, pursuing a critical yet practical integration of novel digital technologies, tacit knowledge of materials, and artisanal techniques. Major works include Shinkenchiku-sha Shodoshima House and Adaptive Design and Assembly System Utilizing Reclaimed Timbers (SD Review 2024, Kajima Prize). He has also participated in the Japan Pavilion exhibitions at the 17th and 19th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia.
